AEP Texas prepares for approaching cold snap, urges customers to prepare for possible severe weather

January 11, 2024

CORPUS CHRISTI (January 11, 2024) – AEP Texas is preparing for an approaching winter weather pattern that is expected to bring freezing temperatures to most of Texas. The storm is predicted to affect all districts in the AEP Texas service territory. We continue to monitor the weather system closely as it develops.

AEP Texas crews are taking the following steps to prepare for freezing temperatures and possible scattered outages:

  • All AEP Texas districts are on alert. All crews are on standby and prepared to respond.
  • All crews are readying vehicles for wintry weather, making sure vehicles are fueled and supplies are fully stocked for restoration work.
  • Storeroom staffs are working to make sure replacement materials and equipment are readily available.

AEP Texas reminds customers to prepare for severe weather now. Customers can do the following in anticipation of the cold temperatures:

  • Any customers on life support or other medical equipment that relies on electricity should prepare a backup plan in the event of an extended outage. We will do everything possible to restore electric service as quickly and as safely possible; however, we cannot estimate how long restoration may take.
  • In advance of the winter event, consider signing up for Outage Alerts by visiting the Outage section on the aeptexas.com website. There also is a real-time map featuring the most current available outage information.
  • Download the AEP Texas mobile app for free. Follow AEP Texas on social media.

Remember, always consider any downed power lines to be energized and dangerous. Please stay at least ten feet away from the area and report the hazard by calling 1- 866-223-8508.

                                                                                ###

AEP Texas serves over one million electric meters in the deregulated Texas retail electric marketplace. As an energy delivery (wires) company, AEP Texas delivers electricity safely and reliably to homes, businesses, and industry across its nearly 100,000 square mile service territory in south and west Texas. AEP Texas also builds new power lines, restores service following outages, and reads the meters via advanced meter technology for retail electric providers (REPs) throughout its service territory. The company also connects or disconnects service upon the orders of the REPs. Connect with AEP Texas at AEPTexas.com, on Facebook, and on Twitter @aeptexas.

                                                                                               ###
