Terms & Conditions: Mobile Alerts

Last updated March 25, 2025

By subscribing to American Electric Power Company’s (“AEP”, “we” “us”) mobile texting program (“Mobile Alerts”), you agree to abide by the following terms and conditions (“Mobile Alerts Terms and Conditions”) and to our Privacy Policy. The “Last Updated” date at the top of these Mobile Alerts Terms and Conditions indicates when these Mobile Alerts Terms and Conditions were last revised. Any changes will become effective when we post the revised Mobile Alerts Terms and Conditions on our website. If you do not agree to these Mobile Alerts Terms and Conditions, you should opt-out of receipt of Mobile Alerts.

  1. By opting-in to receive Mobile Alerts from AEP, you agree that you have provided the appropriate consent required to receive the type of Mobile Alert requested and understand that such Mobile Alerts may be sent via an automatic telephone dialing system to the phone number that you provided.

  2. In order to receive Mobile Alerts from AEP, your phone must be capable of transmitting text messages and supported by an accepted AEP mobile phone carrier.

  3. You represent that you are the subscriber for or authorized user of the phone number that you provided in opting-in to receive text messages from AEP and that you are authorized to approve any related charges for messaging and data applied by your wireless carrier. You agree to promptly update your online account if service for any phone number provided by you is cancelled or if your phone number changes, so that AEP may update its records.

  4. You may choose to opt-out of receiving Mobile Alerts from AEP at any time. You can stop receiving Mobile Alerts at any time by replying with “STOP” from your mobile device. Other than a single text confirming your opt-out request, you will not receive any additional messages unless and until you opt-back in to receiving Mobile Alerts. You may also opt-out by texting “END,” “QUIT”, “REVOKE,” “OPT-OUT,” “CANCEL,” and “UNSUBSCRIBE” to any text message you received. Opt-out requests will apply to all Mobile Alerts, unless you indicate a preference to opt-out of some, but not all Mobile Alerts via the Mobile Alert Preference Center available by logging in.

  5. You agree not to publish, copy, communicate to the public, edit, retransmit, or amend any data received as part of AEP’s Mobile Alerts. The data communication via Mobile Alerts is provided for your personal, non-commercial use only and may not be used for any other purpose.

  6. AEP does not guarantee the timeliness, accuracy, completeness or receipt of text messages transmitted through its Mobile Alerts, including, but not limited to, billing or payment related notifications and outage alerts. Text messages are transmitted by telecommunications service providers over whom AEP has not control.
    • Billing and Payment Alerts
      • Billing and Payment Alerts are provided in addition to regular billings statements, disconnect notices or other standard communications sent by AEP. These alerts are not a replacement for any regular billing statements, disconnect notices or other standard communications. Should any discrepancies between a Billing and Payment Alert and standard communication exist, the information provided in the standard communication shall prevail. Billing and Payment Alerts are provided in addition to any notices required by state law, regulation, or tariff filed by AEP or its subsidiaries.
      • Any notice of disconnection provided by the Billing and Payment Alerts is in addition to any disconnection notices provided under state law, regulation or tariff.
    • Outage Alerts
      • AEP shall not be liable for any delay or failure to deliver an Outage Alert.
      • Planned outages and notifications of such outages will normally not generate an Outage Alert.
      • You shall consider any Outage Alerts as guidance and not as an absolute guarantee. AEP will send Outage Alerts based upon available information, we do not guarantee that the Outage Alerts will be without error.
      • Due to variations in equipment from one area to another, it is likely that there will be variations in the accuracy of the Outage Alerts from one area to another.
      • Short outages will normally not generate an Outage Alert.
      • During large scale outage events, the frequency and timeliness of Outage Alerts may be impacted.
      • Outage Alerts shall only be sent when we believe a power outage exists at a subscribed address. Thus, there will not be a consistent pattern to when alerts will be sent.

  7. ALL MOBILE ALERTS ARE PROVIDED ON AN “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE” BASIS WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF PERFORMANCE, AVAILABILITY, QUALITY OF SERVICE OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. AEP MAKES NO WARRANTY THAT MOBILE ALERTS WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR FREE, ACCURATE OR COMPLETE. YOU FURTHER AGREE THAT ALL USE OF THE MOBILE ALERTS SERVICE IS AT YOUR SOLE RISK. WITHOUT LIMITING THE FOREGOING, AEP DOES NOT MAKE ANY WARRANTIES AS TO THE SECURITY OF YOUR COMMUNICATIONS. YOU HAVE THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY TO SECURE YOUR COMMUNICATIONS.

  8. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, YOU EXPRESSLY UNDERSTAND AND AGREE THAT AEP AND/OR ITS AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, AGENTS, EMPLOYEES, PARTNERS, CONTRACTORS, CONSULTANTS, AND SUPPLIERS (“AEP RELATED PARTIES”), SHALL NOT BE LIABLE TO YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON FOR ANY LOSSES, COSTS, EXPENSES OR DAMAGES OF ANY KIND BASED ON BREACHES OF THESE MOBILE ALERTS TERMS AND CONDITIONS OR YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH AEP, REGARDLESS OF THE TYPE OR BASIS OF THE CLAIM. IN NO EVENT WILL AEP OR THE AEP RELATED PARTIES BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, INCLUDING ATTORNEY’S FEES, ARISING OUT OF THE USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE MOBILE ALERTS.

  9. As part of the provision of the Mobile Alerts, we may receive certain information from you including your mobile phone number, the name of your mobile carrier, and the date, time, and content of your messages or any other information you provide to us using mobile texting. For information regarding the collection, use and retention of your information by AEP, view our Privacy Policy.

  10. AEP reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to suspend or terminate Mobile Alerts at any time, in whole or in part, for any reason, with or without notice to you.

  11. These Mobile Alerts Terms and Conditions, along with any AEP policies that apply to texting and the AEP services, including but not limited to AEP’s Website Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and AEP regarding mobile texting and supersede any prior agreement, discussions, proposals or written statement. If any part of these Mobile Alerts Terms and Conditions is held invalid or unenforceable, the remaining portions shall remain in full force and effect.

  12. These Mobile Alerts Terms and Conditions and AEP’s relationship with you regarding mobile texting are governed by applicable state law.
Should you have any questions regarding Mobile Alerts, text “HELP” to 23711.
