One Voice Update regarding Rio Grande Valley Restoration - Monday, May 1, 2023 - 10:45 p.m.

May 2, 2023

One Voice Update #6
Rio Grande Valley Thunderstorm
5-1-2023: 10:45 p.m.

As of 10:45 p.m. on Monday, AEP Texas crews had restored power to approximately 146,000 Rio Grande Valley customers since 155,000 were left without power at 2 a.m. on Saturday morning.

“We’ve made a lot of progress in restoring power, but we still have a lot of work to complete,” said AEP Texas Vice President of Distribution Region Operations Jeff Stracener. “The storm inflicted significant damage on our operations within the Rio Grande Valley especially in the Mission area—slamming to the ground or damaging over 150 distribution utility poles.”

Stracener emphasized that over 400 line workers are focused on restoring service to those who remain without power.  The majority of remaining outages are concentrated in the Mission area, which includes Palmhurst, Palmview, Granjeno, Abram, Sullivan City, La Joya and Penitas.

Winds in the Penitas area reportedly reached up to 80 miles per hour. “Repairing or replacing a utility pole damaged by high winds is a time-consuming processing involving several line workers,” Stracener said.  “We now anticipate that we will reach or surpass the 95 percent restoration level by 10 p.m. on Tuesday, if not sooner.”

Restoration efforts will continue until service is restored to all homes and facilities that can take power.

In the meantime, Stracener urged customers not to approach line workers involved in restoration work and when driving to move over or slow down when approaching utility vehicles pulled over for restoration work.

Please call (866) 223-8508 to report any remaining downed power lines.  Consider any downed power line to be energized and dangerous and stay at least 10 feet away. Children and pets should be kept away from areas where there may be downed power lines.

“Our thanks go out to customers for their patience and support,” Stracener said.  “It means a lot to our crews who are working long hours to restore power as quickly as safely possible.”

-------------------------------
