AEP employee James Williams began walking every day after a company-wide wellness challenge encouraged employees to exercise more. Williams said the challenge inspired members of his department to walk every day, and he eventually transitioned to rucking and running.
Throughout 2026, he has participated in a 100-mile challenge, 26.4-mile ruck march, and multiple 50k ultra marathons. Williams is competing in a 100k race next month with hopes of qualifying for a 100-mile endurance run.
He said he chooses to run ultra marathons because of the lessons he learns from them.
“I don't run ultras because I enjoy suffering,” he explained. “I run them because discomfort reveals character. Out there, there are no shortcuts, no excuses, and nobody can do the work for you. Every mile teaches patience, discipline, humility, and perseverance. Those lessons carry over into the rest of my life, my work, and how I lead people.”
